Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 50 meters east of Indian Creek, at upper end of a small marsh "embayment", just north of its confluence with the Northwest River. Plot center marked with a white 1" PVC pipe.
Water 16cm deep on 07-11-1995; 2.5cm deep on 10-17-1995.
Nutrient Regime: Oligotrophic.
This plot is located in a somewhat unusual, finger-like marshland wedged between forested wetlands along Indian Creek. Wind-tidal flooding is frequent and the peat substrate is poorly decomposed, creating permanently wet, oligotrophic conditions. The relatively low-statured marsh here, dominated by Eleocharis rostellata, is quite typical of similar, interior marsh habitats of the Northwest River. Several rare plants, including Eriocaulon decangulare, Lobelia elongata, Ludwigia alata, Physostegia leptophylla, and Stachys aspera, are associated with this stand.
